On Saturday, seven of the Sixth Form attended a Model United Nations event, generously hosted by Reigate Grammar School. A Model United Nations (MUN) conference is an event in which students play the role of a diplomat representing a particular country at the United Nations. An MUN conference is run by students for students, and this gives it a unique and exciting atmosphere. Over 250 students from a wide variety of schools attended and FHS students were there as a delegation to represent Switzerland as a temporary member of the Security Council. After a moving flag-raising ceremony outside, the students split into committees and moved into separate rooms to discuss resolutions within committees covering the topics of disarmament and international security, humanitarian and cultural issues, the environment, health, and economic and financial issues. Heated debate followed in a General Assembly meeting in the afternoon and there was a fascinating keynote address by Mark Bowden, former Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan (2012-2017) about the inner workings of the UN. Our students had a wonderful day and are looking forward to their next conference in January.
