For our second trip this Half Term, the Lower Sixth art students went to the Michael Craig-Martin exhibition at the Royal Academy.

We were focusing on his unique composition of everyday objects, use of vivid colour and fusion of pop art and minimalism. This is most noticeable in his paintings such as ‘The Eye of the Storm’, where there is a stark contrast between the hectic composition and minimalistic style.

As part of our preparation for A Level Unit 1, we are learning about casting and the different forms we can create by using it (we previously studied Mária Bartuszová and her use of natural forms). The minimalism of his style (blocking the colour for example) resembles the effects you can create with casting.

The exhibition features sculptural work, paintings and digital art, so each of us were drawn to different aspects of his work.

I particularly enjoyed the digital installation as it explored the effects of movement and music on the art. This is something that has inspired me to try and incorporate them into my art and transform my art beyond just a painting.
