Wednesday saw the second ‘episode’ of the History Lecture Series, a programme which aims to broaden the knowledge, understanding and interest in History of members of the school community, whether they be students, teachers, parents or friends of FHS. The audience had a real treat with the Upper Sixth History Prefects – Mairi, Caley and Anya – presenting on the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. With great skill, they outlined the significance of the city and the motives for the Ottoman attack, talked us through the events of the siege and the immediate aftermath, before critically assessing what the consequences were of this momentous, but perhaps little-known event.
Mairi, Caley and Anya did an absolutely brilliant job in delivering the lecture, and the audience was hugely impressed by their research and exposition on a topic that they selected independently, and which is outside the A-Level syllabus! That they had really engaged their audience was abundantly clear by the many question they were asked in the Q&A session at the end, and their talk was one of the best examples I have seen of the 7Cs (curiosity, communication, collaboration, creativity, craftsmanship, confidence, commitment) being lived out and worked out at School.
