This week on Wednesday we had a talk about the struggles and barriers of being disabled. Emma Brown an amputee, who lost both her legs during an accident a few years ago, kindly came into school to tell us her story. After her accident she had to learn how to re-walk with her prosthetics and other basic skills she had lost. She first found it very difficult to adapt to this monumental change in her life, explaining that sometimes the prosthetics were heavy and tiring to walk in, and on top of that they are expensive and slip that covers her stump can cost around £500 each and must be changed every few months. As you can probably imagine that was not the only problem for her. Emma is a successful musician, and she is trying to make the music world more accessible for people who have struggled like her. We learnt a lot about disabilities across the country and how to respectfully treat a disabled person, which in theory is the same way as you should treat an able-bodied person. We all appreciated her taking time out of her busy life to come and educate us on a topic that is often overlooked by many, and we hope to hear many more enriching talks like this one.
