The Japanese Culture & Art Club launched at FHS this term, offering pupils a wonderful opportunity to spark curiosity, nurture creativity, and broaden their perspectives. Through engaging, hands-on activities, pupils explore the rich seasonal traditions and cultural heritage of Japan in an interactive and enjoyable way.
This term, alongside autumn-themed crafts, paper collage, and origami, pupils learned about traditional kimono patterns—designs that have inspired many popular manga characters. They also experienced Japanese calligraphy and created realistic food replicas as part of their exploration of Japanese food culture. This week’s theme was Kai-awase, a shell-matching game – an entertainment of the aristocracy during the Heian period (794–1185). Many of the cultural and artistic traditions still seen in Japan today blossomed during this era. While taking part in the hands-on craft activity, pupils also discovered the historical roots of these arts.
FHS students Cecily and Florence have fostered their leadership skills, learned new skills, and had lots of fun experiences. Cecily says, “I liked making the sample food, it was fun because as a kid visiting Japan, I often saw the imitation food and didn’t realize that I could make it, it was so cool!” Florence added, “I liked the Halloween origami wreath and learning to write my name, it was calming and fun!” Along with being active participants, Cecily and Florence have become leaders of the club, acting as role models for younger FHS pupils.
As Matthew Syed notes, exposure to diverse cultures fosters creativity and innovation. By learning about the values and philosophies rooted in Japanese culture, pupils may cultivate ideas that lead to imaginative solutions for global challenges. These insights can also inspire future leadership and entrepreneurial creativity—much as Japanese aesthetics and ways of thinking once influenced figures like Steve Jobs.
The Japanese Culture & Art Club is more than a cultural class—it is a gateway to global thinking, creativity, and imagination!
