THE ARTS
Creativity is woven throughout the tapestry of life at Francis Holland, cultivating young artists who are aware of the power and value of their unique contribution. This allows them to create work that is grounded in curiosity, expression and joyful exploration.
At Francis Holland, creativity is nurtured with purpose and ambition. Whether in drama, music, dance or art, pupils are encouraged to experiment, collaborate and discover their individual voice. Opportunities such as our biennial Creative Perspectives programme foster interdisciplinary thinking, inviting girls to make meaningful connections across artistic forms.
ART
Art at Francis Holland is a vibrant and expansive subject where imagination and intellectual curiosity sit side by side. All pupils study Art in Years 7–9, with many choosing to continue to GCSE and A Level, developing both technical confidence and a deep awareness of artistic traditions from across cultures and time periods.
Our studios are places of exploration, where pupils work with a broad range of media and approaches, supported by specialist teachers who encourage original thinking and personal expression. Regular gallery visits, workshops and collaborations with visiting practitioners enrich pupils’ understanding of the visual world, while our Art Scholars contribute to projects that connect artistic practice across the school. Through this, girls gain the skills, sensitivity and critical insight to communicate ideas with clarity and creativity.
DANCE
Dance is delivered in partnership with Chelsea Ballet Schools, giving pupils access to expert training in classical ballet, modern dance and musical theatre. Ballet forms the foundation of the programme, with pupils studying technique, artistry and the rich heritage of the discipline, and many progressing to prestigious institutions including the Royal Ballet School.
Alongside this, modern dance and musical theatre broaden pupils’ creative horizons, encouraging versatility, expression and confidence. Lessons and group classes are designed to nurture resilience and joy in movement, with examinations offered where appropriate. Our annual Gym and Dance Display celebrates the dedication and artistry of our dancers, reflecting the energy and pride that define this flourishing programme.
DRAMA
Drama is a dynamic and inclusive subject where storytelling, collaboration and creative risk‑taking thrive. Pupils explore a wide range of theatrical styles and traditions, developing performance, analytical and technical skills through both curriculum lessons and an exceptionally rich co‑curricular programme.
With around twelve productions each year, from classical plays to physical theatre and musical theatre, every girl has the chance to participate – on stage or behind the scenes. Our Carmel Hall Black Box Studio Theatre, equipped to professional standards, gives pupils the space to experiment, refine their craft and understand the full spectrum of theatrical production. Annual performances in professional theatres, including recent productions at the Shaftesbury Theatre and Battersea Arts Centre, offer unique insight into the creative industries and inspire pupils to aim high in their artistic ambitions.
MUSIC
Music is at the heart of life here, enriching our community with shared purpose, joy and a strong sense of identity. All pupils study Music in Years 7-9, with many continuing to GCSE and A Level, supported by a department that champions participation, progress and a lifelong love of the subject.
Almost half of our pupils learn an instrument, and with more than fifteen ensembles – including orchestras, jazz groups, chamber ensembles and choirs – there are opportunities for musicians at every stage. Our vibrant choral tradition sits alongside contemporary and instrumental pathways, ensuring pupils develop musicianship, confidence and collaboration through regular performances. Music here is both academically rigorous and deeply enriching, giving every girl the space to grow as a performer, listener and creative thinker.
