While London was awash with torrential rain on Thursday 23rd June, Year 8 set out for Penshurst Place in Kent.

We had a marvellous guided tour, passing through the portal used by Elizabeth I when visiting her lady-in-waiting, Mary Sidney, at Penshurst, to access the medieval Barons’ Hall, the West Solar, Queen Elizabeth Room and Long Gallery. Having explored the Tudor and Stuart connections of the House, we enjoyed a picnic which fortified us for the art workshop run by Mr Edes in the afternoon. In the sun-filled gardens, groups of Year 8 girls sketched the flora of the South Lawn, the Italian Garden, the Heraldic Garden and the Jubilee Walk. The subsequent round of ice-creams and lollies rewarded everyone’s artistic efforts in the heat.
