This week Years 4 and 5 ventured into the forest for some more bushcraft and outdoor learning!

They spent time whittling their own bows and arrows, followed by an archery competition. They had to whittle their arrows, tie their feathers and bows and find the best flexible sticks in the forest to ensure that their bow strings were taut. Year 4 spent time learning how words can be used to express feelings and emotions, with a focus on songs, hymns and poems and the responses we feel to them. They practised a Buddhist meditation technique, focusing on objects in the forest around them. They also spent time reading ‘A poem to be spoken silently…’ by Pie Corbett and discussing how metaphor and adverbial phrases are used in the poem. They used the forest around them to answer questions such as “It was so silent I heard… It was so peaceful that I heard… It was so still that I felt… It was so calm that I sensed…” They then wrote their own poems based on Pie Corbett’s using the natural stimulus around them as inspiration. Year 5 channelled their class reading book: the Whitby Witches, creating freeze frames in the forest from different parts of the story. All of the girls showed excellent initiative, teamwork and resilience. Well done Year 4 and Year 5!
