Last weekend 19 FHS sixth formers studying Physics, accompanied by two members of staff, travelled to Geneva to view the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
The highlight of the visit was the guided tour, led by a physicist who had been a member of the team who discovered the Higgs Boson. The tour also took in the area of CERN which manages a piece of apparatus on the Space Station which examines the particles bombarding the Earth’s atmosphere from space. We stayed in a comfortable centrally located hotel and also had the opportunity to dine traditionally, blow an alpenhorn(!), see the UN buildings and have a walk in the botanical gardens.
We were blessed with clear skies and an average temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. All in all an intellectually productive and enjoyable time was had by all.
