On Saturday 7th February, a ‘Philosophy Morning’ took place from 9.30am-12.30pm.

The morning attracted as many as thirty girls from years 7 to 11, and it proved to be a tremendous success. The team leaders, namely Andy and Steve, inspired every girl with their sheer passion and love for their subject. After a group introduction session, we were split into two groups: years 7 and 8 in one, years 9 to 11 in the other. Andy led the latter group, and I was heavily inspired by his knowledge and willingness to illustrate his ideas, whilst at the same time, encouraging us to put forward our own viewpoints. After a meaningful and insightful discussion on the ‘selfie’ being an act of vanity or self-expression (a topic very relevant to us in this age), a short break followed. Many other valuable sessions came next, but the final and noteworthy discussion considered ‘the trolley problem’. This moral dilemma stretched every single mind in the room, and no majority was reached. The fact that Andy asked us to act out the situation (not entirely!) meant that we could really engage with the problem, whilst showing great determination and perseverance to come up with a plausible answer. After this, both groups were brought together for a final session. To conclude the morning, we discussed if the aim of philosophy is to make us more puzzled, or less confused. Many girls offered valuable responses, and this concluded the event. Overall, the morning was very well organised by Father Kenny, Miss Graham and Mr Stone, with greatest thanks to Andy and Steve, for providing us with an insightful and inspirational morning, it was a huge success and thoroughly enjoyed by every attendee.
