Literary Society talk on John Ford’s “‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore”
On Tuesday 10th March, Dr Clare Whitehead of Queen Mary, University of London gave a Literary Society talk on the early modern play, “‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore” by John Ford. Taking in the play’s stage history, critical reception and illuminating source material such as a prose text by Francois Rosset, Dr Whitehead’s talk was immensely engaging and useful, especially for our UVI girls who are currently studying the play as part of their study of A Level English Literature. Dr Whitehead’s consideration of the play in view of the contextual and social frameworks that underpin it also offered interesting insights, particularly in terms of the Sixth Form girls having seen productions of the play, both at the Barbican and, more recently, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe Theatre.
