This year’s theme for Black History Month is called Proud To Be and FHS is very excited to be a part of it. It invites Black and Brown people of all ages throughout the UK to share what they are Proud To Be. In the Junior School, we will commemorate people of black or brown heritage who have had a great impact throughout history. We will also focus on how to make our school the most inclusive and supportive environment it can be.

Throughout the Junior School there will be a cross-curricular focus that spans History, English, Art and PSHE. The following will be happening in the Junior School:

  • An assembly by Mrs Dixon and Mr Russell
  • A diverse display of books in the library
  • The history curriculum will give the girls an insight and understanding of Black culture through studying individuals of historical significance
  • In PSHE, the girls will have discussions centred around identity and the acceptance of others
  • In English all the girls will study either a picture book (Key Stage One) or a short story (Key Stage Two) written by a well-known black author
  • On Wednesday 13th October Year 3 – 6 will join an online author talk by children’s author, Joseph Coelho

We are also keen to create a special Proud To Be display on the playground noticeboard. We will invite our school community, including the parents and teachers, to write what they are Proud to Be! We would absolutely love you to get involved, so please do look out for the slips in the girl’s school bags. We would be grateful if you could return these to school by Monday next week.
