On Friday 7th February, Year 10 pupils walked in the winter sunshine to the Apollo Victoria Theatre for GCSE Science Live, an annual opportunity for GCSE Science pupils to be inspired by some of the UKs top science communicators: Andrea Sella, Helen Czerski, Robert Winston, Alice Roberts and Jim Al-Khalili.
With the backdrop of the stage set from the musical Wicked, FHS pupils, along with over two thousand others, learned of the exceptional properties of everyday ice and the threat posed by its disappearance from many parts of our planet; the challenges of studying the convulsing surface of our stormy oceans and the wonders of human reproduction. They are heard how all breeds of domestic dog from Great Dane to Chihuahua arose from a small group of European grey wolves and why time travel really is possible (though not easy).
The pupils picked up many top tips for exam success from a GCSE Science examiner. Robert Winstons fertility talk was, as ever, the audience favourite but Jim Al-Khalilis talk on time travel and black holes seemed to provide the greatest inspiration to our girls.
Is it merely a coincidence that Physics is now the most popular science A Level at FHS?
