Georgina Blackwell (Editor of the Schools Guide and Deputy Editor of Tatler’s Guides and Supplements) and her colleague, Emma Samuel, delivered a lunchtime talk on Monday 26th January.
They spoke passionately and candidly about the publishing world (the benefits and challenges) and the different careers one could forge in the industry. Girls learnt the difference between the three key branches: editorial, advertising and the support departments. They also gained useful insights into the different roles and their related key responsibilities.
Furthermore, girls learnt about the importance of work experience (in addition to any formal education path they may choose) and networking.
The key skills both Ms Blackwell and Ms Samuel underlined were:
- strong interpersonal skills
- a commitment to hard work and being open to developing your career from the bottom up
- learning to be proactive
- thinking on your feet
- problem-solving skills
- being organised
- confidence
- learning how to be resilient and thick-skinned
The girls were also informed about the internships and work experience opportunities at Tatler and within the Condé Nast Group.
