Theatre Studies is offered as an AS course in the Lower Sixth with the opportunity to take the full A Level a year later.

The course demands practical and creative communication skills and the ability to create drama in a performing or production role. Students are required to write about drama and develop skills of analysis.

Unit 1: Exploration of Drama and Theatre – 15%

The study of two plays with practical workshops. Candidates are assessed on practical work and exploration notes by the tutor.

Unit 2: Text in Performance – 20%

Practical examination. Candidates will perform or choose to design in a play production. Candidates will be assessed on how well skills are used in performance by a visiting examiner.

Unit 3: - 15%

2hr written examination

Unit 4: Devising 20%

Candidates will devise an original piece of drama. The performance will be recorded on video. 75% of the marks will be based upon the content of a working record and tutors observations.

Unit 5: Text in Performance – 15%

The unit focuses on the in-depth study of one further play from the point of view of the director, designer or performer. The play is adapted and produced by students and assessed by a visiting examiner.

Unit 6: Text in Context – 15%

One play is chosen from a choice of two and studied from the point of view of a director. Candidates are required to study and research the production history of the play. There will be a 2 hr 30 min examination with an extract set from the chosen play. Answers should provide an evaluation of the way in which the medium of drama has been used to create a historical and modern interpretation.
