Sixth Form Introduction

Music

Advanced level Music combines well with both arts and science subjects and is highly recommended and accepted by universities in combination with either of these. Most universities provide varied music degree courses for which this A level prepares them thoroughly.

The specification encompasses the core skills of performance, composition, history and analysis, all set and studied within their social contexts.

Candidates are able, through the various options available, to develop their own enthusiasms and skills.

There are six units of study. Nos 1, 2 and 3 constituting the Advanced Subsidiary GCE, completed in three term and units 1 to 6 constituting the Advanced GCE.

Unit 1: Performance
The candidates perform solo pieces totalling six minutes in length that are recorded and they participate in varied ensemble activities that are logged. One of these performances is of the candidate's own composition and she may choose to direct an ensemble, rather than play in one if she wishes.

Unit 2: Composition and compositional skills The candidate composes one piece of no less than three minutes long which is fully notated, performed and recorded, In addition, she studies two compositional techniques selected from a list of options and works exercises based on these as part of her course work. The Board supplies the exercises in January.

Unit 3: Topic Areas
Two topic areas are selected from a wide variety of subjects which reflect every style of music, ranging from conventional topics such as Music for Large Ensemble and Religious Choral works to less usual topics of World Music and Music for Films. These topics reflect our varied and multicultural society and are studied in their relevant social contexts with reference to specific set works. This area is examined by written paper and listening test.

Unit 4: Options
This offers alternative pathways of study in which the candidate may choose to take performance or composition to a higher level.

Unit 5: Composition and Performance
A log is kept of solo and ensemble performances taking place during the year. More advanced techniques are studied.

Unit 6
One of the topics studied in unit 3 is continued and a new topic area is selected for further study. This is examined by listening and written papers.

A Level Music is a very versatile examination enabling the candidate to develop her own individual strengths and skills and implement the uses of Music Technology if desired.
