History of Art
The study of Art History is never-ending and the subject is a delight
because it involves looking at, and thinking about, the splendid
products of the human imagination. Although the course concentrates
on painting, sculpture and architecture, the History of Art is a
study of all forms of visual communication from antiquity to present
day.
The new A' Level will consist of two parts:
An Advanced Subsidiary (AS) qualification which represents the
first half of a full A' Level. Candidates are expected to sit the
examination halfway through the A' Level course.
The AS syllabus will be a broad introduction to the subject and
covers western painting, sculpture and architecture from classical
to modern times. Students will be expected to visually and critically
analyse a work of art as well as consider contextual issues. These
include critical approaches to art history, patronage, methods and
materials and interpretation of subject matter.
The second part of the A' Level, known as A2. The candidate is
expected to sit the examination at the end of the second year of
study.
Firstly, two areas of study will be chosen from the following:-
1. The Florentine Renaissance
2. The High Renaissance in Rome
3. Revolutionary France
4. The Impressionist Era
5. Victorian Narrative Painting
Secondly, there will be thesis of about 3,000 words based on a
chosen option.
The A' Level student needs enthusiasm and an inquiring mind and
must be prepared to visit museum, galleries and important monuments
to study the works at first hand. |
