English Literature
The English Department offers an Advanced Subsidiary course (AS)
in the Lower Sixth and an Advanced Level (A2) course in the Upper
Sixth. These may be combined for a full A' Level.
Both courses offer a challenging combination of close study and
wide reading. Our aims are to develop critical autonomy, academic
rigour and real pleasure in the study of literature.
The AS course comprises three units:-
Unit one: Shakespeare : closed text (15% of total A Level
marks)
Examination: two questions on one prescribed play, one passage-based
and one essay.
Unit two: Poetry and Prose (20% of total A Level marks)
Examination: two questions, one prose and one poetry, requiring
close study
and critical appreciation of set passages from prepared texts. At
least
one text pre-1900
Unit three: Literature Complementary Study: (15% of total
A level marks)
(Coursework/one text)
A folder (max 3000 words) containing two items of writing on a single
text:
one on text as a whole, the other on selected passage(s).
The A2 course comprises a further three units:-
Unit four: Poetry and Drama pre 1900 (15% of total A Level
marks)
Examination: two questions,one from each section:
Section A Drama; Section B Prose.
Unit five: Prose post-1914 (15% of total A Level marks)
Coursework: one or more prose texts not previously used, produce
folder (max 3000 words) containing either two items or an extended
essay.
Unit six: Comparative and Contextual Study (20% of total
A Level marks)
(synoptic unit) One new text
Examination: two questions on single topic area, one question from
each section.
a. close study of an unseen passage or passages related to the
set topic areas
b. essay questions involving comparative and contextual study of
at least two related texts.
The course will also include theatre trips and lecture visits relevant
to the texts being studied and may include a residential weekend
in the country.
English Literature A' Level is an excellent preparation for a wide
range of University courses and future careers. Students have the
opportunity to develop sophisticated analytical skills, excellent
powers of communication, IT, and a broad and enduring appreciation
of literature. |
