Sixth Form Introduction

Biology

Biology is a fascinating subject and it is the study of living things. The specification continues and extends the GCSE work and has a high practical content.

Biology can normally be studied in conjunction with either Science or Arts subjects.

The specification is divided up into six units:

AS students take units 1-3 and A' Level students take all 1-6.

The subject content of the units is as follows:

Unit 1 Cell Biology and genetics

Unit 2 Exchange, transport and reproduction

Unit 3 Nutrition and Ecology, plus own individual practical investigations

Unit 4 Respiration and co-ordination. Food and diet or human health and fitness

Unit 5 Biodiversity and evolution

Unit 6 A synoptic test, plus an individual practical investigation.

A residential field trip to a field study centre is an essential part of the course. During this time the students design and carry out their own practical investigation.
