Sixth Form Introduction

Art

The AS/2 Art course is essentially a practical one. However, as a significant proportion of the total assessment is devoted to all research and preliminary work, an in depth appreciation of art and the ability to analyse, discuss and make constructive use of the work of others is essential. History of Art is offered as a separate A level subject and it can be very useful to study both. The AS and A2 assessements each consist of 3 units as outlined:

Unit 1 Art Examination

This lasts 5 hours for AS and 15 hours for A2 - spread over 3 or four days.
The questions are given to the students 4 weeks in advance to give them a chance to prepare their work. Up to 75% of the total marks are given for the preliminary work which reflects the whole process from seed ideas and explorations to development and conclusion.

Unit 2 Coursework - a
Unit 3 Coursework - b

Coursework units 2 and 3 each involve an in depth focus on a given theme or related themes. As with the examination unit, marks are awarded not just for the end piece or pieces, but also for the whole development which includes the initial visual explorations and experiments, as well as reference to and use of art and any other relevant sources.

The two coursework units are taken as part of 3 units for both A2 and AS.
(A2 thus consists of 6 units in all, 4 coursework and 2 examinations).

Students wishing to take Art as an A Level subject should have a strong commitment to the subject as work undertaken in the Art studio forms only a part of the work necessary to achieve the high standards demanded at A2.
Students are expected to keep their own sketch books and attend outside life classes, and are encouraged to experiment with a variety of different media as much as possible. It should be emphasised that these extra activities are in addition to normal homework. Students are expected to take advantage of the many galleries and exhibitions available in and around London, in order to study and learn from artists' work first hand.

The course also offers the opportunity for students to explore the role of the digital camera and the scanner within their work.

The A Level course is a demanding one and combines well with academic subjects.

Many of our students who wish to go to art college are simultaneously prepared for entry. The success rate of entry to prestigious art colleges is excellent.
