Introduction

‘Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future.  What could be more important than that?’ - Michael Palin (President of the Royal Geographical Society)

Geography is a remarkably all embracing subject which inspires students to take a keen interest in the world in which they live. As Michael Palin suggests, many of the issues facing the world today and which will have an impact on our future can be better understood through the study of Geography.

At Francis Holland School, the subject is taught in a lively way using a great variety of techniques and resources.

Students learn a wide range of skills and techniques during their geography courses at various levels, including the interpretation of maps, pictures and diagrams, the analysis of graphs and data, collecting data in the field, field sketching, simulation games and role play, discussing and debating. IT is seen as having a very important role in the acquiring of many of these geographical skills.
