Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking is part of the enrichment programme which Francis Holland offers to the Lower Sixth (alongside General Studies), reflecting our commitment to providing the broadest education possible for our students. The subject not only allows your daughter to acquire an extra AS Level in addition to her main A-Level subjects, but also to attain key skills which will be of use at A-Level, degree level, and beyond.

This skills-based course helps students to reflect on the process of reasoning, to learn how to express themselves logically, and to analyse the flaws in others' arguments. The AS course comprises two units. In the first unit, the language of reasoning is examined, together with the criteria needed to assess the credibility of evidence. In the second unit, students learn how to construct well-structured, convincing arguments of their own, as well as to analyse and evaluate the arguments of others.

Critical Thinking puts into practice one of Francis Holland's aims to ‘provide a challenging and stimulating curriculum which encourages an enthusiasm for learning, intellectual curiosity and creativity'. We are committed to enhancing our students' A-Level studies, as well as to providing useful and practical preparation for university admission. By studying Critical Thinking, students are well-equipped to deal with aptitude tests such as LNAT (for Law), BMAT and UKCAT (for Medicine), the range of assessment tests which an increasing number of British universities have introduced, as well as SATs for American universities.
