Curriculum

The Art Department and Junior School

We believe it is very important that girls from the Junior School are taught in the art department. We

therefore teach year 4, 5 and 6 in small groups, each on a half academic year cycle. It is exciting to see how young minds work with pattern, colour and composition.

Key Stage 3

Year 7 girls are very fortunate that they are given art twice a week, a double lesson of art and then a double lesson in three-dimensional design. The 3-D course is not design and technology but focuses on sculpture and structure.

Year 8 focuses on building up drawing skills and their knowledge of colour, pattern, structure and composition.

The year 9 course is more challenging and the girls look at the history of art and its relationship with their own work. They often look at portraiture and work in a variety of materials and techniques.

GCSE (OCR EXAMINING BOARD)

This is a two year course offering the students the opportunity to develop their creative skills through the creation of two course-work units.

The students will develop cultural knowledge and their own personal attributes including self-confidence, self-discipline and commitment.

AS and A2 Fine Art (AQA EXAMING BOARD)

AS Fine Art

This is a one year course, based upon the development of a portfolio based unit and an externally-set assignment. The students will experiment with a variety of materials and techniques. They will also develop their analytical skills and an understanding of the history of art and the world around them.

A2 Fine Art

This is a continuation of the AS course, where students will work on a personal investigation and an externally-set assignment.

All students, in year 12 and 13, will have the opportunity to draw visiting professional models in a series of life drawing classes.

The department has a high record of 6th form girls accepted onto the foundation course in art and design held in a number of London art schools.

The examination results for Art at both GCSE and AS/A2 are always very high, most students achieve A* at GCSE and A/B at AS/A2 level.
